What's the origin of the "Yahoo! is toast" phrase?

That exact phrase actually came from one of our users while testing My Way just prior to its launch. We thought those three words said it all. Here's how it happened:

In late September, we unveiled My Way to a small group of randomly selected Internet users to gauge their reactions to our site - its look and feel, navigation, performance, etc. We had been building My Way for months and were anxious to get some real feedback. Really anxious. And a bit nervous. This was our baby.

Well, the first guy to review the site started clicking around with about 10 of us hanging over his shoulder. (Did we mention we were anxious, and nervous?) He said nothing for what seemed like an eternity. (It was actually about 4 minutes.) We couldn't tell what he was thinking, what he liked or disliked. Finally, without looking up, he said, "Wow... Yahoo is toast."

We were relieved. We were excited. We were bouncing off the walls.

Now, one guy's opinion doesn't mean Yahoo is going to go out of business (or even turn into a slightly burnt piece of bread). But for him - and many others since then - My Way has made quite the first impression. Suddenly, Yahoo's aggressive advertising and direct marketing techniques became much more obvious and much more difficult to ignore.

We're off to a great start, but don't worry - we're not resting on our initial success. We actively seek user feedback in order to best determine what additions and changes should be made to My Way in the future. We're already planning on adding more new features in the weeks and months ahead.

Isn't a My Way ad campaign ironic?
Is it just me?
Any response from Yahoo?
